Roger Cletis Payne

Roger Cletis Payne, age 96 of Russellville, Missouri passed away on Monday, October 26, 2020, at Jefferson City Manor Care Center in Jefferson City, Missouri.

He was born in Cole County near Russellville on June 29, 1924, a son of the late Raymond A. and Nola M. Scott Payne.

On February 15, 1944, in Jefferson City, he was united in marriage to Bertha J. Campbell who preceded him in death on March 13, 2005.

A lifelong resident of central Missouri and a 1943 graduate of Russellville High School, Cletis was a faithful member of the Church of Christ where he served for many years as an Elder, Bible class teacher and song leader.

In addition to farming most of his lifetime, in earlier years Cletis was employed by Tweedie Shoe Factory, MFA Exchange in the Russellville and Enon areas, retiring from Chesebrough Ponds (Unilever) in 1985.

He enjoyed being on his farm tending to his cattle, working with his horses and taking his mules and wagon on many trail rides and wagon trains throughout central Missouri. He also enjoyed time spent with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters; Janice Gilliam of Jefferson City and Patricia Acton and her husband Darrell of New Bloomfield; four grandchildren; Amie Wheeler and husband Andrew of Lohman, Jason Acton and wife Diedra of Columbia, Eric Acton and wife Becky of Harrisburg and Cassandra Anderson and husband Timothy of Russellville. Six great-grandchildren; Madison Wheeler, Mackenzie Wheeler, Sanibel Acton, Waylon Acton, Landry Anderson and Bridger Anderson; one step great-granddaughter Sophia Morris; one sister Judy Stephens of Jefferson City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Bill Payne; a sister Bonna Rapp; an infant sister Cleora Payne; a son-in-law Jack Gilliam as well as a sister-in-law, brothers–in-law and a niece.

Visitation will be held at Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Russellville on Friday, October 30, 2020, from 10-11 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. with Carey Terry officiating.

The general public is welcome to attend services while following social distancing guidelines. Facial coverings are encouraged while in attendance.

Interment will be in the Enloe Cemetery, Russellville.

In lieu of flowers, for those wishing to do so, it is suggested that a memorial contribution in Mr. Payne’s name be made to the Fair Haven Children’s Home, 3132 N. Fairhaven Loop, Strafford, Missouri 65757 or Little Prairie Bible Camp, 13616 Co. Rd. 2250, St. James, Missouri 65559.
